The Monster That Ate Canberra is a childrens book written by Michael Salmon in 1972 and became a favorite of mine having moved to Canberra from Sydney as a child and discovering this book in my primary school library.  The book was reprinted in 1990 featuring new artwork and locations.  You can view Michaels Site here..  Google Maps

View The Monster That Ate Canberra in a larger map via Google Maps.  BUT, I suggest before doing this, you read on dear viewer.

google_earth_logo“The Monster That Ate Canberra” Geo-Narrative  is best viewed using Google Earth.  Google Earth is a fantastic application that places Google Maps onto a 3D globe.  Taken from the Google Earth home page

Google Earth lets you fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, from galaxies in outer space to the canyons of the ocean. You can explore rich geographical content, save your toured places, and share with others.

Instead of viewing “The Monster That Ate Canberra” in plain old Google Maps, why not download the file below and view it the way it was designed to be viewed!?  Through Google Earth!!

Click on THIS link  or the picture above to download the .kmz file to view in Google Earth.  Extract the Zip File to a location and run the doc.kml file from the unzipped folder and enjoy!

I personally suggest using an Elevation Exaggeration of 2 when viewing the map which you can find in Google Earth under the Tools > 3D View option.  I also strong suggest that you turn on the 3D buildings option for the ultimate Bunyip experience.  Read each page at your leisure and when you are ready to move on, simply double click the next page from the menu on the left and be magically transported to the next location.

When you feel like visiting Alexander’s stomping ground again, I shall put an itinery together for you and yours. Canberrans miss your cleverness Shaun. Queensland’s fortune, our loss.

I was born in Canberra in 1974 so the moster that ate Canberra was one of my favourites, when it was re-released in 1990 I sent enough money to my kids school to purchase two books so they could have one each but the buggers bought chocolates and milk shakes with it. How can I purchase a copy now?
